Yes you heard me, unfortunately there’s a big threat for you at this moment! Tell me please, why do you love
internet? First, let me tell you why I love it. I love it because of its freedom, you can be anybody here, anywhere, reading anything you want no matter your job, or even your age! Internet is a great source for documentation, having fun, connecting with others or even finding the job that suits you.
As I came across a Google’s page today, I was shocked. There was a big title “A Note to Google Users on Net Neutrality:” so I read the whole article. I say it again, I was shocked, Eric Schmidt was writing that there is a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called “net neutrality” and Google was requesting our help. Nobody wants the internet to be controlled by phone and cable companies and not allow us to see what we first want and when. Nobody wants restrictions. Internet is a a great highway, a world without restrictions and that’s how it must be in future too!
If you want to help with this, you are pleased to call (202-224-3121) and let your voice be heard.
You can read Eric’s article here.

…will there still be pr0n?

Priceless

So you’d rather have the government control the internet?
June 21st, 2008
you should live here in the uk where they want to control every aspect of our lives!!!

The internet should not be controlled by anyone, and that is the point.

Does Google really need our help? Because I kind of thought them and Yahoo could just team up and be like, “Yo, government, no I don’t think so…”
They could blackmail them with, “If you go through with this.. you’ll have to use Ask.com from now on…” That should scare them enough to know Net Neutrality is a bad idea!

I am aware of this heated debate as well. Leave it to a bureaucrat to ruin a good thing. The internet is within the grasp of being controlled like this. But if citizens were to move first — things would improve. If only we could find a way to make the internet totally wireless and beyond the means of any organization on the face of the earth to control. Traffic is relayed from home to home all over the world. There would be so many participants that any organization would be hopelessly outnumbered. If a man like Torvalds can bring free operating systems to the table, and GNU free software can exist, why not this?

It’s not about the government controlling the internet, it’s about making controlling the internet as a whole illegal. Without Net Neutrality, ISPs will be able to give priority to any company that pays them. Yahoo and MSN might give comcast a little bonus, which would lead to google running slowly.
The problem comes when, a few years down the line, ISPs begin demanding huge fees for a page to load the same day your broadband connection first requests it. Anyone who doesn’t or can’t pay will be crushed. Google, yahoo, apple, facebook, and youtube all started out as two or three guys in a garage, used the freedom of the net to gain success, and then changed the way we communicate. If we lose net neutrality, that well never happen again. The internet will never get better. First the webcomics, then the startups, then the blogs, then nothing is left but the billion dollar mega-corporations.

And no jimi, there might not be porn. Once selective throttling begins I can easily see fundamentalists taking it over and limiting gay rights websites and pron websites first.
June 21st, 2008
It’d be the government in control of the isp’s decision to block content.

We WANT Net Neutrality, that keeps the internet as it is, if we lose Net Neutrality, our internet becomes like our TV, we buy “channels” and we can only watch what we have bought access to.
June 21st, 2008
@E: Net neutrality means no one will “control” the internet. It is a good thing. The alternative is to have telephone and cable companies regulate the media that flows across their lines.

jimi, if those pricks have it their way, they won’t let you have your way with hand your way.

As if the Government is the only other option. What a jackass.
Right now NOBODY controls the Internet and thats what makes it so great. Thats what makes it neutral. Thats what we want to preserve. This is not an issue of choosing who gets to control it. This is an issue of stopping ANYONE from taking control of it.
The system works great the way it is. The small websites are on the same footing as the big websites. Regular people can create and share content, you don’t have to work for a TV show or newspaper to be creative and have your creations seen. That is whats awesome about the Internet. Thats what is at stake.
The phone companies want to create packages of websites you are allowed to visit. Making things like Stumble Upon and Google useless. Why use them when you only have access to 25 websites in your package? Furthermore companies and organizations who pay the phone companies will be allowed to have their sites and ideas placed front and center while their competitors are denied access.
You like Porn? Well what if Verizon doesn’t? Guess who gets to decide what you can see and cannot see.
Needless to say The Government (which again is not the issue here) is the least of your worries considering they answer to us. The phone companies do not.
